Prince Arthas Menethil was the son of King Terenas Menethil II of Lordaeron. He was raised by his mother, Lianne, along with his older sister Calia. He was knighted into the Order of the Silver Hand, of which his mentor Uther the Lightbringer was a founding member, around the time the Undead Scourge started to appear in Lordaeron.

Following the Culling of Stratholme, he travelled to the frozen continent of Northrend to find the one responsible. While doing so, he found the blade Frostmourne, which he used to end the Dreadlord Mal'Ganis. The blade took his soul, and the Lich King Ner'zhul spoke to him through it, slowly turning him into a Death Knight, a champion of the Scourge. He returned to Lordaeron, murdered his own father, and named himself "King of Lordaeron".

After the Lich King's power began to wane, he was called back to Northrend to defend him against demonic forces that were working to destroy the Frozen Throne. Attacked by Blood Elves and dwarves, he was joined by Anub'arak, and the two travelled through the spider kingdom of Azjol-Nerub to reach Icecrown in time to save the Lich King. In the end, he donned the Lich King's armor and merged his soul with Ner'zhul's, the two forming the entity of the Lich King.
